Assignment: Campus Speech Policy

Course: Free Speech on the College Campus: Embracing the 1st Amendment and Civil Discourse
Institution: Duke University (Civil Discourse and Democracy Duke Immerse program)
Faculty: Sue Wasiolek

Assignment: Campus Speech Policy

  • Create and write a policy for Duke related to free speech, pickets, protests, demonstrations, encampments, and so on that you believe would be effective (however you define this) while also passing “constitutional muster,” aligning with Duke’s institutional values, representing the virtues of compassion and empathy, and encouraging civil and authentic discourse.
  • Clearly identify what makes your proposed policy a compassionate/empathetic one. How might your proposed policy be different if it were not taking a compassionate/empathetic approach?
  • Articulate any aspects of the policy that you believe might be incongruent with the virtues of compassion/empathy and authenticity.
  • The policy should address speech issues for students, faculty and staff.
  • You will be creating these policies in teams with 3–4 of your classmates, and you will present your policy on [date]. The actual written policy from each group is due the last day of class (30% of your grade).
